On Dec. 6, the National Safety Council released a report outlining what it says would be the result of applying “graduated driver licensing” (GDL) to all 50 states for teen drivers. There are a host of laws which encompass GDL—restrictions on night driving for teens and bans on texting and cell phones, all of which disappear when the driver turns 18-years old. Dec. 6’s report claims that 2,000 lives could be saved and over $13 billion a year if the GDL laws were applied nationwide. According to a report issued in 2009 by the National Safety Council, teen accidents cost the U.S. $38.3 billion annually, and federal traffic safety data shows that car accidents are the number one killer for teens in the U.S. Congress will discuss in the next few months the likelihood and logistics of applying the GDL laws across the country. |
